This warm vanilla custard milk drink is how I both start and end my day. This warm milk beverage tastes like custard and it's full of nutritious ingredients. Best of all its versatile ingredients-wise (you can customize it), it tastes great for adults and children alike, and is very quick and simple to make.

Warm vanilla custard milk drink is made with milk heated up to the point right before boiling and various spices and other ingredients.
I've been starting and ending my day with a mug of this for YEARS and now my toddler does too. This beverage also played a huge role in both of my pregnancies and postpartum/breastfeeding periods since it's just so incredibly nourishing.
The secret ingredient that makes it taste like custard (or cake batter) and even more nutritious? Eggs.
That's right — at the very end, this milk is removed from the heat and poured into a blender right before raw eggs and/or egg yolks are added. If that sounds weird, I'm begging you to just give it a try.
The raw egg is cooked from the heat of the milk the way a traditional custard would be.
Do you like custard and pudding? Well, you will love this drink if so.
Warm vanilla custard milk drink is actually incredibly versatile too because you can customize the spices and ingredients to your liking. You can even add a shot of espresso!
And if you're looking for a delicious drink to replace coffee or even a nutritious real food meal replacement drink for those days you just don't have time — this is IT.
Hot spiced milk is best enjoyed on its own but it also pairs beautifully with a decadent dessert like my old-fashioned fresh apple cake, my sourdough pumpkin cake or pumpkin spice bundt cake, or even my sourdough cinnamon rolls.
Ingredients
- Milk | whole milk is preferred. I always use raw, grassfed milk.
- Eggs + additional yolk | technically optional but just TRY something different for once in your life!
- Vanilla Extract
- Honey or Maple Syrup | Sweeten to taste however you prefer. Maple sugar is a nice sub.
- Cinnamon | or chocolate, pumpkin spice, or nutmeg, or turmeric OR whatever you like!
- Sea salt | just a pinch to contrast and enhance the sweetness.
- Collagen Optional, but a great way to make this nutritious beverage even more so.
See the recipe card for quantities.
I prefer to use whole raw milk (try it with goat or sheep milk too), pastured eggs and egg yolks, and I also love to add collagen to mine too.
Instructions
This could not be simpler to make.
- Warm up the milk in a medium saucepan, making sure it does not boil.
- Pour the hot or warm milk into the blender.
- Add spices and other ingredients.
- Turn the blender on.
- With the blender running, add raw whole egg and yolk. You can also only add an egg yolk or stick to one whole egg.
Substitutions & Variations
- no eggs - instead of eggs that turn hot milk into something decadent and even more nutritious, leave them out because you don't trust me (sad face).
- yolks only - feel free to omit the whites and use only egg yolks.
- pumpkin spice - make this into a pumpkin spice hot milk!
- coffee shot - add a shot of espresso in the morning instead of having your usual latte, foam this milk instead.
- cocoa - turn this into gourmet hot chocolate by adding cocoa into it.
- maple - use maple syrup instead of honey or even maple sugar.
- high calorie meal replacer - add a tablespoon of butter and/or coconut oil.

Wow- I just tried this and it was way better than I imagined! It disappeared very fast. I’ve tried egg yoke coffee before but this was much better. I did it a bit differently, since I have an espresso machine I just steamed regular milk, then poured it over two scrambled egg yokes, honey, cinnamon and nutmeg. Then I just mixed it up well with a fork. I was surprised by how bright yellow the color was from the local eggs I used, it looked like I used turmeric! Definitely will be making this on a regular basis now that I am pregnant!

I've done it similarly too since we got a milk foamer, mostly for my toddler in the mornings since he's impatient for his "meko." Enjoy, I've drank it throughout both pregnancies and I can't do with out it now.

Hi there! Maybe you've shared somewhere, but can you share again for we novices, where or how you select your collagen? I've been so leery of many sources and am wondering how you go about scoping. Thank you!

Hello! Organika and Vital Proteins are great but I always buy the bulk bags of Great Lakes collagen. We have ours shipped to a friend in the States and then pick it up when we go visit. Granted, it has been a while due to the border closure. Costco has collagen at a good price as well.
Wihbeth says
Can I make it up ahead of time and warm it up and add the egg yolks when I consume it?
The Peasant's Daughter says
Oh absolutely you can.

Thank you for sharing this recipe! I just made it. I am almost 16 weeks pregnant and NOTHING sounds good. It doesn't help that I still have a bit of nausea and am getting over a stomach bug as well. I thought, at least it will be nourishing. Might as well try it. I think it would be great with cocoa added (once I stop having an aversion to chocolate, haha)!
The Peasant's Daughter says
You're very welcome! I still drink it daily, it's just so nourishing.

So grateful to have found your blog! Just found out I’m pregnant with my 2nd baby, my first almost 9 years ago 😌 Last time I had a strong distaste for coffee during pregnancy but this time I’m missing it. I’ve been searching all day for a warm beverage and this has got to be the one! I did read that nutmeg is not suggested during pregnancy, but I’ve also been finding articles that say the same about a lot medicinal herbs and common kitchen herbs. Do you think drinking this everyday is ok? Thank you ❣️
The Peasant's Daughter says
Not only did I drink this every day while pregnant, but I'm continuing to drink it daily as I breastfeed my almost 5-month old! A tiny bit of nutmeg isn't likely to do any harm either, I think it's one of those things here you would have to be adding in loads and that is hard to do with such a strong spice.

I just made this because I am 36 weeks pregnant with baby 3 and was not feeling spicy tacos for dinner! I am lucky enough to have raw milk. I added a little nut milk and heavy cream to 1 cup of raw milk and I used a variety of spices including turmeric. It’s like a warm, buttery hug!
The Peasant's Daughter says
It's EXACTLY like that! Good luck with baby #3! That's so exciting!
